Questions and Answers about Keys on Avalon

  • Absolutely. Keys on Avalon offers lessons for students of all ages, from young beginners to adults. Whether you're enrolling a five-year-old for their first experience with music or finally making good on a lifelong intention to learn piano yourself, there's a place for you here.

  • You don't need one for your free trial lesson, as that will take place in the studio. That said, having an instrument at home is essential for making meaningful progress, and we'll talk about options during or after your first lesson. Keys on Avalon has a limited number of keyboards available for rental or rent-to-own for families who need one.

  • No. Tuition is all-inclusive. Printed materials, sheet music, and practice assignments are provided at no additional cost, along with a three-ring binder to keep everything organized. If you'd like to purchase your own copies of the method books used in lessons, titles and edition information are available on request.

  • Yes, at the teacher's discretion. A $25 travel fee applies to lesson locations more than 5 miles from the studio, up to a maximum of 20 miles. Locations beyond 20 miles may be considered on a case-by-case basis. All off-site lessons are audio recorded for student and teacher safety, and a parent or responsible adult must be present in the home for students under 18.

  • Yes, in two ways. First, partner lessons are priced at the same monthly rate as a shorter solo lesson. A 45-minute partner lesson costs the same per student as a 30-minute solo, and a 60-minute partner lesson costs the same as a 45-minute solo.

Second, the Practice Pays program rewards consistent practice with up to $15 off the following month's tuition for students who log regular practice sessions in the Vivid Practice app. Details on both are available on the Pricing page.

  • For younger students especially, just asking a child to play you what they've been working on or sitting in on a lesson occasionally goes a long way.

Additionally, making sure practice has a regular, protected place in the week is one of the most impactful ways to support a child's progress. Even 15 minutes a day at a consistent time makes an enormous difference over weeks and months.

  • For most beginners, 15 to 20 minutes of focused daily practice is a reasonable and effective starting point. As students advance, longer sessions become more beneficial. The Practice Pays program is built around sessions of 10 to 45 minutes, which is a good general guideline for most students. Consistency matters more than volume; a student who practices five days a week for 15 minutes will almost always outpace one who practices for an hour once a week.

  • Keys on Avalon is well suited for beginners as well as students who have some background and want to keep progressing, children or adults. If you're an advanced student looking for conservatory-level preparation or competition coaching, it's worth having an honest conversation about whether Keys on Avalon is a good fit.

  • With at least 24 hours notice, we'll make every effort to reschedule within the same week. If no slot is available, a video lesson with updated practice assignments will be provided. For planned absences like vacations that are known before the start of the month, you can request special consideration for a 20% reduction in that month's tuition. Less than 24 hours notice generally does not qualify for a reschedule or makeup.

  • Progress is tracked through a combination of in-lesson observations, included via emailed notes after each lesson, and the Vivid Practice app, which students use to log their practice between lessons. Longer-term goal-setting is an ongoing conversation — some students are working toward a specific piece or skill, others are simply building their relationship with music at their own pace.
